Pig Cake

This cake was pretty fun to make. It wasn't for any special occasion, I just wanted to try a pig cake and here it is!

3 cups cake flour
1 3/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup room temperature butter
1/3 cup maraschino cherry juice
2/3 cup buttermilk
16 maraschino cherries, very roughly chopped
3 eggs
1/2 cup chopped pecans (Optional)

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Blend together sugar and butter. Add cherry juice, and buttermilk. Stir, then add dry ingredients. Beat 2 minutes and then add eggs. Beat a couple of minutes more. Gently stir in cherries and nuts.

Pour into prepared oven safe glass bowl. Size will depend on how large or small of a pig you want. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 to 35 minutes, or until done. Cool and frost with your favorite frosting. Decorate with pink fondant. For the mud use chocolate frosting.

  3. Thanks I would love to share. I used marshmallow fondant for this and I made the cake in a glass bowl for the shape. Not a whole lot of tips. I am new at this and still learning. :)

  14. Hilarious! I love cake "just because"...that's a really great reason. I did go ahead and make some case "just because" this week, but it sure didn't look like that. However, I kinda do after eating cake all week...

    1. The feet are made out of the fondant that I used on the cake. I just shaped them the way I wanted and the cut a slit in them. Hope that helps.

  32. It looks like the bowl you used has a bit of a flat bottom. How do you get the cake to look so completely round on the top? Thanks! This cake is so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The bottom is flat but the inside of the bowl is perfectly round. If there is a ridge on your bowl you can take a knife and trim it until it's round.

  35. Thank you! I was also wondering: Are the feet made only out of fondant? And is it best to refrigerate this cake or just cover and leave on the counter? Thanks again!
